The Subversive Eye

I’ve just returned from St. Petersburg, where the Exhibition, The Subversive Eye: Surrealist and Experimental Photography from the David Raymond Collection just opened at The Dali Museum. Needless to say, I am beyond honored to have my collection shown there. The week was a whirlwind of talks, walk throughs, press events and parties. The museum and their team went all out to create what I call, “a holy shit” experience. In addition, they published a remarkable catalog. I cannot say enough about the museum, it’s staff, location, the permanent collection, the building, their use of technology and more. Here is a link to the description of the show.

This was a nice piece done on the exhibition:

Before heading to St. Petersburg, I had the honor of speaking with Dr. William Jeffett and Prof. Dawn Ades at the International Society for the Study of Surrealism conference in Paris about my collection and the upcoming show. We spoke to a full house! It was amazing and an honor.

The Leavers

Trong Nguyen and I are in the process of developing a stage production based on his family’s experiences leaving Vietnam on the last boat to leave Saigon. We are working with stage director, Brian Rhinehart. Here is a link to our initial page:

The Leavers

Last Letters and Conscious Dying

Since my last post…., Trong and I decided that The Last Letter Writer was better suited in an “art” context than in a film context. As such, we submitted it to the Black Mountain College Re-Happening and it was selected for inclusion this past spring. The reception to it was overwhelming. We also included an installation of vintage blank postcards, pre-stamped and with rubber stamped text on the edge that says, “Written by a human.” People were engaged with the film and the opportunity to write postcards. I mailed out almost a hundred. We are now considering other exhibition/gallery possibilities.

Our subject Ngo, passed away a few months ago. So, the last letter writer is gone. I feel grateful to have been able to create something about him and the art of handwriting. May we never lose our ability to do that.

On the subject of dying, I co-produced a documentary about conscious dying that is about to make the festival rounds. Here is the website and trailer for The Last Ecstatic days.

The Last Letter Writer

After a 6 year process, Trong Nguyen and I finally finished our experimental documentary, The Last Letter Writer and have submitted it to festivals around the globe. Over the time it took to complete it, the film took on even more resonance than when we began it. You can see the trailer here: www.lastletterwriter.com

f/11 and Austin

f/11 and Be There will be having it’s world premiere at the Austin Film Festival, which takes place from October 25-November 1. The film will be in competition too! Needless to say we are thrilled and honored. If you happen to be in Austin during that time, please come see the film and give us a shout.

A New Beginning...

I launched my first website in November 2010.  Quickly as with all technology, it became outdated as Flash based websites became the exception and not the norm.  I held on until now...

For some reason, I was not able to copy and paste all of my posts from my previous site, so starting today, it will all be new.

As most of you who know me are aware, I have been working on the documentary, f/11 and Be There since September.  Jethro Waters and I are hoping to finish the production piece by mid April and then begin the process of bringing it all together.  Here is a link to the website and trailer: www.f11andbethere.com.
